Barnardo’s is a national charity protecting, supporting and nurturing the UK’s most vulnerable children. They help hundreds of thousands of children, young people, parents and carers via their 800+ services across the UK.
Barnardo’s teamed up with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to create the ‘Driving Healthy Futures’ initiative. The new project saw the training of more than 120 Barnardo’s staff and volunteers to deliver cooking workshops in their communities, giving people the skills they need to cook cheap and healthy food at home for the whole family.
Barnardo’s and Enterprise Rent a Car approached us to discuss the filming of six 30 minute cook along cookery programmes which could be used on a special Barnardo’s Family Space website. The programmes needed to show the safe and healthy preparation of ingredients, demonstration of the full cooking process and (of course) the final tasting sessions – a sort of supercharged ‘Saturday kitchen’!
We proposed and delivered a multi-camera set up with four high definition cameras, lighting and additional overhead rigging to ensure we captured a great variety of wide, mid and close up shots. Each of the six programmes were filmed ‘as live’ on location with presenters provided with an autocue system enabling them to deliver agreed scripts and relevant programme links. We captured audio via four separate channels of audio ensuring clarity of speech with each of the presenters as well as strong ambient audio of all the cookery sounds.
All of the rushes were taken into post production and edited down to ensure a strong narrative and continuity to each programme. A series introduction video was produced and each programme topped and tailed with relevant titling, music and end frames. Timecoded first cuts were provided to the client for any additional input or amends after which the final edits, colour grades and captions were completed and each programme was provided as high definition downloadable files.
In total we successfully delivered fourteen cook-along programmes which are easy to follow and enable families (even those who do not have much cooking experience) to try something new.
Following the success of Series 1 we were recommissioned to deliver Series 2 – providing an additional six cook along programmes involving specially selected recipes being demonstrated by staff from Enterprise Rent A Car as well as a special appearance by Ruby Bhogal, a finalist in the ninth series of The Great British Bake Off and regular chef on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch.
