"David and the team understood exactly how to bring an important health message to life in a way that felt warm, engaging and easy for families to relate to. By putting children at the heart of the film, they helped turn complex advice into something memorable and accessible.”
Amie Dobinson - Barnardos
Barnardo’s is one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, supporting hundreds of thousands of children, young people and families every year. As part of its work supporting families in the early years, Barnardo’s wanted to create an oral health awareness video that could help parents understand how simple everyday habits can protect children’s teeth and prevent tooth decay.
The film needed to be engaging, easy to understand and suitable for use across a range of channels including family support programmes, digital platforms and community health initiatives.
Barnardo’s are a long standing client of Big Buzz Productions. As part of our ongoing work they asked us to produce a short educational video about children’s oral health that would resonate with parents and carers.
Working alongside dental experts, the key objective was to communicate clear, evidence-based messages around preventing tooth decay in young children. The video needed to highlight that:
Rather than producing a traditional medical explainer video, we wanted to create something that felt more natural, relatable and engaging for families.
We developed a number of possible creative treatments and presented three possible routes to Barnardo’s. Our favoured concept was called “Kids Tell the Tooth”. The idea was simple but powerful: allow young children to talk about teeth, food and brushing in their own words.
Filmed in a nursery environment, we captured a series of relaxed interviews with children aged four and five. These authentic “vox pop” moments created a warm and engaging narrative that helped introduce key oral health topics in a playful and relatable way.
Once the children’s interviews had been filmed, we worked with an oral health expert to reinforce the key health messages and ensure the film aligned with current dental guidance.
This approach allowed the video to balance:
The final film combines natural storytelling with clear educational messaging to create a health awareness video that is both informative and engaging for families.
The finished oral health promotional video has had great feedback from teams within the charity as well as dental health experts. It provides Barnardo’s with a powerful resource for supporting families and raising awareness about children’s dental health.
By focusing on everyday habits around nutrition, drinks and brushing routines, the film helps parents understand that small changes can make a big difference in preventing tooth decay.
The engaging style of the video means it can be used across a wide range of settings, including:
The project demonstrates how thoughtful video production for charities and health campaigns can transform complex health advice into something engaging, memorable and accessible.
