How to choose a video company

The world of video content is growing at pace and becoming ever more accessible to businesses and organisations. As a result, companies that want to be more successful are turning to video production services as a way to reach a wider audience.

Finding and choosing a video production company that is right for your needs and budget can sometimes be difficult – that’s why we’ve put together this brief five-point guide on how to choose the right video company for your project.

1. Research the company

When hiring a video production company it’s important to do your research – the company’s website and social media channels are a good starting point. This will allow you to get a better idea of what the company is all about, their experience and what they can offer.

First and foremost, make sure the company you hire has a solid reputation – a company with a good track record and reputation will be able to provide you with high-quality, cost-effective work and most importantly provide strong testimonials from others who have worked with them in the past.

2. Look at their work

Look at the company’s previous work – most companies of any worth will have a showreel and examples of their work on their website. Look at the quality of what they produce and get an idea of the breadth of experience the company has producing videos for other businesses and organisations. This will help ensure they can easily relate to your company’s goals and audience.

Try to find out a little bit about the equipment they will use for your project. You’ll want to make sure they not only have high quality cameras – but also check to see they have the right kit to light things well and capture quality audio. Poor images can be cleaned up a little in the edit suite – poor audio can’t and its 50% of your project!

3. Talk to them

Most importantly talk to the company and the individual who will be leading your project. Finding the right experience and ‘fit’ cannot be done just by looking at their website. Finding someone that will understand your business and needs and who can work productively alongside you is key. Creating video is a partnership and the best videos are always ones where the client and the company ‘click’ and are able to bounce ideas off one another.

4. What will they charge?

Making sure you understand the company’s pricing structure is vital. Once they have a good idea of your project most companies will offer a ‘fixed cost’ price for your project. Ensure you agree this in advance – and ideally ask them for a simple contract for providing the services. This will ensure there is no misunderstanding on what is being provided, the total cost and timescales involved.

Most companies will have a standard day rate they charge for general filming and a separate day rate for editing. Ask them what this is as that will help you make comparisons with others. Your final costs will ultimately be based on the amount of time they need to deliver the project for you and whether you also include other specialist services such as aerial filming/photography, script writing, animation etc.

5. And finally

When it comes to marketing your business, products or organisation video is a great way to get your brand out there. It’s important to do your research well, speak or meet with the relevant company representatives and if you are hiring the company for the first time  speak to others they have worked with.
